Leinster Swimming Championships – 13th November 2011. Four students, Nathan Fitzmaurice, Sean Lynch, Michael Cherry and Shane Crawte represented Mount Temple in the Leinster Swimming Championships in November. They won the Silver Medals in the 4 X 50 metre Freestyle relay. Shane Crawte won a medal in the Breaststroke race. Congratulations for their efforts and the organisation that went into entering this competition. Three of the four swimmers train 14 hours a week with Atlantis Swimming Club in Tara Street which shows the commitment of these students. Well done to the students, Mount Temple is currently looking at ways to promote swimming for Mount Temple students.

On Friday January 20th at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris a team of 4 pupils (from Belvedere College, Loretto St. Stephen’s Green, Muckross Park and our own Shelley Carlyle) debated against a French team from the Lycee Paul Claudel. The debate (of which this was the 7th) is organised under the auspices of the Alliance Francaise and sponsored by the Ireland Fund of France in association with the Ardagh Group, with the aim of allowing Irish students to showcase their language skills.
The team of 4 was selected from the national debating competition and came together in December to begin work on the topic that “les reseaux sociaux nous empoisonnent la vie.” The debate, which was judged by the Irish Ambassador to France Paul Kavanagh and Pat Cox among others, was a very heated affair with extended heckling and no concessions were made for the fact that the Irish team was not debating in their native tongue! Nor were any needed as the Irish team won and impressed all present with their mastery of the French language and debating skills.
Shelley gave an outstanding performance and is to be commended for her commitment, hard work and great courage which will stand her in good staid in her future career.

On Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd most of our 6th Year students of French completed their mock oral exams with the aim of preparing them for the actual Leaving Cert Oral Exam in April.They were all given a written account of their strong/weak points and those who wished were recorded to provide extra feed-back.

On Monday January 16th, the 6th Year French debating team of Esmay Murray, Adam Thakore, Danny Bowles and Aoife Leonard beat St. Declan’s Cabra in the quarter-finals of this year’s Alliance Francaise Joutes Oratoires. Esmay was awarded the prize of Meilleure Oratrice on the night. The team now proceeds to the semi-finals which will take place in March.Well done to all concerned.

The 6th Year team of Esmay Murray, Aoife Leonard, Adam Thakore and Danny Bowles will be in action in the quarter finals of the French debating competition next Monday at 8.30pm in the Alliance Francaise. The topic is “L’Irlande n’est plus un pays accueillant” and Mount Temple is against. All are welcome.
