Important information regarding Junior Certificate Science 2017

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Please read the information provided below, in particular the section about Coursework B.

The rest of this term will almost entirely be spend working on this part of the Junior

Cert Science course.

There are three parts to the Junior Cert assessment process in Science:

Coursework A = 10%

Coursework B = 25%

Terminal Examination = 65%

Coursework A: Students must complete 30 mandatory activities as specified in the syllabus. Each student has their own laboratory copy with a written report of each activity. These have been kept in the labs under the supervision of the teachers throughout the three years of the Junior Certificate course. This must be available in the school for inspection. Students sign off on those activities they have completed by the end of April 2017

Coursework B: Each student undertakes two prescribed  investigations based on topics in the syllabus.  The investigations will be prepared, carried out and reports written up in class time between now and the Easter holidays.  Report booklets to be signed off by the end of April 2017. Some research and preparation may be done at home but must be the student’s own work. Most materials for the investigations this year should be available in the science laboratories though students may be asked to supply some materials themselves.

It is imperative that all students are present at all their scheduled Science classes during this half term to complete the investigations (preparation, carrying out and reporting), otherwise incomplete coursework will have to be submitted.

Terminal examination: this will consist of a written paper on Mon 12th June  which will cover the three areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and which may be taken at Ordinary or Higher level.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Strategy of Attendance 2017

Written by HelenGormley on . Posted in General News, Information for Parents

This is a draft of our Attendance Strategy for 2017.  While it is hasn’t been ratified by the Board of Management (next Board Meeting)  it has been implemented since 9/1 and students have had two extended roll calls to familiarise them with the contents. The areas particularly relevant for parents / guardians and students are highlighted – notification of absences,  leaving during the school day and punctuality.   We appreciate your support on this.

ASTI Strike Day November 8th

Regrettably ASTI has also notified the Board of Management of a Strike Day on November 8th.  If this strike day goes ahead as planned the Board of Management will not be in a position to discharge its responsibility with regard to the care of students in its charge.

The Board of Management is therefore requesting you not to send your son/daughter to school on November 8th.

The Board of Management will notify parents of arrangements regarding any further strike dates as they arise.

The Board of Management regrets this course of action is necessary.  The Board has no wish to interrupt the education of students in this school; and will make judgements based on the best interest of our students in subsequent days.

Yours sincerely,

Situation after midterm

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

ASTI withdrawal from Supervision and Substitution

As you are aware from the media, the ASTI has directed its members to withdraw from supervision and substitution duties with effect from 7th November 2016. This follows the repudiation by ASTI members of the Lansdowne Road Agreement.

Health and Safety legislation and the in loco parentis principle place a duty of care on school management to ensure the safety, health and welfare of pupils.  The Board of Management wishes to keep the school open if at all possible.  To this end school management have assessed the supervision and substitution needs of the school and have put in place arrangements for the provision of supervision of pupils.

As of our understanding of the current situation today, 28th October, we have decided that we will be open for all students on Monday 7th November – unless you are notified otherwise in the interim.

The Board of Management wish to assure you that it will continue to make every effort to provide education and care for our pupils and values your support in this endeavour.
